Mission in Motion :: Mission

Mission In Motion Women’s Cycling Team

Thank you to all of our sponsors who helped make this vision become a reality.  Our team was successful in earning over $5000.00 to donate to Lourdes Mission in Motion in Binghamton, New York.  Nine Central new York women united in the Fall of 2004 to create a nonprofit organization to race together on the Lourdes Mission in Motion cycling team.  By the Spring of 2005, our team was comprised of 10 elite racers and a sister team of 25 developing riders.  The elite team traveled to races throughout the Northeast from april through November.  We have added several new members to the team in 2006 and will be representing our sponsors in many races including the National Championships in Seven Springs, PA in July!

In our first year as a team, we have achieved many excellent results donating 100% of all prize earnings to LOURDES Mission in Motion.

LOURDES Mission in Motion is comprised of two mobile health units which bring primary care and breast health care to remote, unserved, and underserved areas throughout the region.   The Mission in Motion vans put comprehensive health care on wheels, traveling to health fairs, work sites, community events, senior centers, schools, and churches.   Having community support and sponsorship will allow us to use our talents and winnings to contribute to the community to promote women’s health and wellness.

Our vision for the 2006 cycling season is again to donate 100 % of all prize earnings to Lourdes Mission in motion.  With the support of our sponsors, we hope to sustain an elite racing team of 10-12 racers and continue mentoring our growing sister team of developing cyclists.  Our prosed 2007 elite team ranges in age from 16 (an up and coming local junior champion) to 53 (a veteran racer who has won a National Master's championship!)  Members of our team have represented Central New York at the Empire State Games every year for the past 9 years.   We have competed in many events throughout the United States, winning and placing well in most.   The women who will be racing on our team are well respected among racers, officials and promoters throughout the region.   We take pride in our professional behavior and good sportsmanship at all races and events.

The goals of the Mission In Motion Cycling Team are as follows:

1) promote health and fitness through cycling

2) promote the sport of bicycle racing, particularly among women

3) develop beginning riders and racers with an emphasis on safe riding skills and sportsmanlike conduct

4) challenge ourselves to improve and excel as competitive athletes

5) serve as healthy role models to women of all ages

The team plans to achieve these goals while competing in local bike racing events, New York State Championship events, and National Championship events.   Additionally, we plan to provide promotional opportunities to our sponsors and LOURDES Mission In Motion.   We are incredibly grateful to the local sponsors who are helping to support this mission.   Our sincere gratitude goes to Security Mutual Life Insurance Company, Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan (CDPHP), NBT Bank, VanZandbergen Photography, T.E.R Cabinetworks, William H. Lane, Dick Sonnes Fitness, Ski & Cycle, Terry Precision Cycling, VOLER team apparel, and Ritchey Bicycle Components.

The Tioga Velo Club, our USCF club affiliate, promotes an extremely popular race weekend, the “Chris Thater Memorial Races,” held in Binghamton, New York.   The Chris Thater Race Weekend features multiple categories of cycling races for pro/elite and amateur/recreational riders.   It attracts thousands of participants and spectators and features a world class 5K running race as well.   Our participation at this race and other area races as the first all women’s cycling team in our area offers unique promotional opportunities to our sponsors and an opportunity for our team to promote women’s health and wellness in our community by furthering the message and mission of LOURDES Mission In Motion.
